The currency of Norway is the Norwegian Krone, with one Krone equalling 100 öre. Notes come in denominations of NOK1000, 500, 200, 100 and 50. Coins are in denominations of NOK20, 10, 5 and 1 and 50 öre. Cash can be exchanged in many places throughout the country with little trouble. Traveller’s cheques are widely accepted, though to avoid additional conversion charges these should be in US Dollars, Pounds Sterling or Euros. ATMs are widespread through Norway and the majority of major international credit and debit cards are accepted. The export of domestic currency is limited to NOK5,000 and the export of foreign currency is unlimited, as long as it can be proven that the amount was imported or was obtained through conversion of other currencies. General banking hours in most areas are from 0815 to 1530 Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 0815 to 1800 on Thursdays. Shopping hours are normally 0900 to 1700 or 1800 on Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays, from 0900 to 2000 on Thursdays and from 0900 to 1300 or 1500 on Saturdays, with a number of shops opening on Sundays. Formal suits are expected of business meetings along with normal customs and politeness – punctuality is expected. It is customary that a guest should not drink until the host has made a toast to their good health. Tips are expected by restaurant waiters of around five percent and by hotel porters depending on how many pieces of luggage are being carried. Taxi drivers are not normally tipped.
